My Grandfather's vegetable garden

My Grandfather's Vegetable Garden is the new movie of Martin esposito. A "family" film, and for good reason, Martin had the idea when he visited his grandfather to recharge his batteries. An idea, rather obvious, like a flash, in front of an "image" that he knows well, an image that accompanied his childhood: his grandfather working in the vegetable garden.
A slice of life sets in, 18 months long, where Martin rediscovers the art of gardening with his grandfather, the occasion for vegetable and metaphorical conversations about the meaning of life. The film is a testimony where the transmission of know-how and interpersonal skills play the leading roles and reactivate a certain collective memory

"I watched my grandfather with all his knowledge and I had the vital need to film it to immortalize this transmission hoping that through this documentary, it also serves others. »
Martin esposito

My Grandfather's Vegetable Garden, it is our Grandfather's vegetable garden, it is your vegetable garden, it is the vegetable garden that you share with your children and grandchildren.

When we had luck during his childhood to enjoy‘A vegetable garden and its gardener, we have certainly experienced magical moments. Emotions and landmarks that we do not suspect when we live them, which build us without realizing it. A nascent Proust madeleine.

Buried deep within us by the battering of modern life, like an inability to look at others, to share with them, to enrich ourselves with them, curled up as we are behind our (little) life ... These magical moments, come back to us in the face, like a revelation : the meaning of life !

Interview with Martin Esposito, director

I thank Martin esposito for his film, and also, for taking the time to answer jaime-jardiner.com in 4 questions.

Thanks Martin!

How do you feel a few weeks away from the film's release?

I am very happy to see that the film is eagerly awaited ...
It's magical to see in the previews how the spectators are boosted and motivated thanks to this sharing of experience, just like me when my grandfather passed on his knowledge to me and that's what I wanted share with my camera.

Of this very personal shoot with your grandfather, what is the strongest, most moving moment that you will remember?

One of the strongest moments I have experienced was when I realized that filming was over. I had only one desire, it was to stay and live in the vegetable garden, in the end I wanted this shooting to never stop.

And to talk about "vegetable garden", what is the vegetable that you adored cultivating?

The vegetable that I loved growing the most, I wouldn't say cultivate, I would say watch it grow, because with so little effort nature gives us so much when we let it live. It is without a doubt a rediscovery of all these vegetables that you think you know so well, I would say first the tomato, so strong and so fragile at the same time.
But for me it's a whole, each vegetable, each insect, each herb has a role that is not limited to just feeding us, they are also there for everything that lives around us ...

Do you have a “Proust madeleine” in the vegetable garden?

My Madeleine de Proust, no doubt the smells, memories always present, memories of spast times
I'm thinking back to my grandmother gone too quickly ...
My grandfather helped me make bring out a conscience, a desire to do, to act, to regain a taste for life after SuperTrash, and not to give up on his dreams.
As my grandfather said: “don't worry about pitchoune, I'm here!
And there I understood: love ... "

Jean-Pierre Garnier Malet, "These truths that we hide"

"Perceptions", film by Renée Scheltema

All men have five physical senses to perceive their environment: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. But we all also have other modes of perception to apprehend the world around us in a more complementary way. These extra-sensory perceptions do not use any of our classic five senses. Indeed, this information arrives directly to our brain by other ways to allow us to become aware of it or to censor it.

Today a part of the brain remains unexplained by scientists, so there are other regions, and other translators sensitive to these extra-sensory perceptions. Some individuals would have more developed sensory capacities than others, but these capacities are not detectable directly, but it is possible to develop them.

MY GRANDFATHER'S VEGETABLE GARDEN

With the seasons, Martin films his grandfather Vincent who lives only for his vegetable garden since his wife died. Behind the camera, there is a grandson who films his grandfather with immense tenderness. In front, this widower who transmits to him as much the secrets to have the best possible fruits and vegetables as his values full of common sense.

Documentary with the air of conversation with broken sticks, My grandfather's vegetable garden is particularly endearing by the relationship between these two men, these two generations, but also by the lesson of life which emanates quickly from it. Even more than a family bond, it is one with knowledge and a vision of things that is more fundamental than ever at a time of crucial ecological issues.

This vegetable garden does not only cultivate the question of how to eat better: that of a natural heritage, of an endangered philosophy, now to be protected.

In the same genre you can find WINE CALLING (A documentary on winegrowers launching themselves into natural wine) or even TOMORROW (The documentary by Mélanie Laurent and Cyril Dion on citizen initiatives in the face of the ecological crisis.).

Film: "My grandfather's vegetable garden" by Martin Esposito

Yesterday evening, a large audience for this film at the cinema in Clermont (Oise) .. and for good reason: we are aware of the importance of a return to healthier food, to a more necessary and beneficial relationship with nature. Lots of gardeners in the room and interesting post-film discussions with the director.

A family film, the grandson films his grandfather in his vegetable garden, and it is Martin's mother who films when he helps his grandfather. Italian immigrant family from Calabria in Lorraine and the grandfather lives near Antibes where the film was shot.

From the start of the film, I felt a Mediterranean atmosphere. Beauty of the images, of a nature not destroyed - one does not use the tiller, too harmful for the "inhabitants" of the earth, the worms, the insects in the making. Wild grasses are not pulled up, they have their uses. And the basket of delicately picked figs. I was "mouth watering".

The film advances with the seasons, month after month, with the works inherent in each. Importance given to seeds, it is the grandfather who chooses the most beautiful specimens of his vegetables to extract the precious seeds.

In fact, we are witnessing "organic" cultivation, without artificial fertilizers or pesticides.

We would like everything to be treated with as much love for nature as the one that inspired this film which deserves a wider distribution.
