I chose the Horticulture course because of my love of the outdoors and nature. You study a wide range of subjects from all the general sciences to the more horticulture-based subjects such as landscape management, food production and sportsturf management. I would recommend this course to anyone who enjoys working within the natural environment and leading an outdoor lifestyle. During my time completing this course, I developed a keen interest in sustainability and design and I look forward to developing this further in my future career. Our World faces immense challenges; climate change, mass migration from the countryside to mega cities, food shortages, excess consumption, food waste and pollution. Through the sustainable cultivation of plants and an increase in plant-based diets, many of these challenges can be overcome.

Our scientists have developed over new varieties of fruits and vegetables, pioneered insect attractants for pest control and invented ultraviolet pasteurization and the gene gun to improve crops.

We continue to grow and evolve, working together across disciplines to reimagine the future of food and agriculture systems. It is about a one-hour drive from Rochester, Syracuse and Ithaca. Geneva has a small-town atmosphere but is a vibrant, evolving city with a merging of diverse culture, educational opportunities, and businesses.

It has the beauty of the Finger Lakes at its fingertips, and more than wineries in the region. Boating and fishing along with many outdoor sports and recreations are popular year round.

The Geneva community is rich with events such as the Musselman Triathlon, summer concert series and other cultural events that are often held at the Smith Opera House. The city of Geneva has excellent schools and health care systems and is also home to Hobart and William Smith Colleges which has just completed a state of the art performing arts center.

Cornell faculty in Geneva are able to use the sports field house at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and often collaborate on research projects with HWS faculty and students.

For more information, visit. Benefits Tuition and health insurance provided. Organic weed control requires frequent soil disturbance, hand labor, high rates of organic herbicides, or the application of large amounts of organic or synthetic mulches.

These factors can be barriers to economic, soil health, and sustainability goals. EWC could simultaneously address several of these challenges in the US high value organic perennial cropping sector. The student research assistant on this project will evaluate the performance, safety, and environmental sustainability of EWC under field conditions.

This will include describing the influence of weed type, size, and age, as well as soil type and moisture conditions on control success. Additional side projects may include examining the impacts of EWC on insect pests, predators and pollinators in fruit systems. The student will also conduct crop assessments and describe impacts of EWC on perennial crop vigor. The student research assistant will analyze results and engage with local stakeholders ato present their data at field meetings and extension outreach events.

Desired qualifications include excellent oral and written skills, field or greenhouse research experience, and an interest in weeds and weed management. The ideal candidate should be motivated, organized, and able to work independently and in a team setting. Creativity is key to being a successful research scientist and its value to a laboratory can not be understated. While the candidate will not be expected to operate heavy equipment, experience and comfort working around machinery is appropriate.

Environmental Horticulture

The Cornell Graduate Program in Public Garden Leadership PGL is an intensive one-year Master of Professional Studies program focused on public garden professionals wishing to advance their knowledge and career preparedness at an internationally recognized research university. The program co-directors work with each student to develop a course of study and to identify an MPS action project topic and approach. Students enroll in Cornell coursework during the fall and spring semesters and conduct the majority of the work on the action project between the end of the spring semester and the completion of the program. The PGL group travels each spring break for an in-depth study at a number of public gardens.

The MS/PhD Graduate Field of Horticulture includes the study of fruits, vegetables and landscape plants to sustain the environment, enhance economic vitality.

While studying in Botswana in southern Africa as a pre-veterinary medicine major, Ranann Blatter remembers her host family's insistence on the importance of working with family. The "family business" is the 25 year old Portland, Oregon nursery Cornell Farm , located in the southwest hills of the city. When she came back to OSU from Botswana, she switched her major to Horticulture and began looking at all the degree options. Blatter was looking for a different career path from horticultural production.

The MPS degree program at Cornell CALS is ideal for career-focused students interested in the thorough study of issues and advancements in the fields of life, social, and environmental sciences and agriculture. An MS is research based, with students building a thesis over the course of two or three years. In contrast, the MPS degree is a one-year, course-based program where students study the intricacies and in-depth questions of their field of study. Offered through the graduate field of Integrative Plant Science, the Master of Professional Studies in Agriculture and Life Sciences degree program is a specialized, one-year, course-based master's degree program. Areas of study cover a wide range of issues and advancements in plant and soil sciences, including: controlled environment agriculture, geospatial applications, soil health, c annabis science and industry , public garden leadership, and more.

SIPS Horticulture Section

With the appointment of Professor Ralph L. Watts as Head in , the Department of Horticulture rapidly attained the mature status that it holds today. The Department might be said to have grown up. At this time the whole School of Agriculture was growing rapidly. In the year '07 the School enrolled 45 students; in '09 it enrolled ; in '10 the number was , and in '15 reached a peak of , which was the highest figure reached until the late 's. The Department of Horticulture had its share of students and for a few years enrolled more students than any other Department in the School.

The Department of Plant Sciences offers graduate studies leading to the M. Specialized academic and research training in Plant Sciences is available in plant breeding and genetics, weed science, biotechnology, and field and forage crop production and management.

Program Components

I am a plant sciences major concentrating in plant pathology. I grew up in small rural village in Upstate NY called Rushville, and went to a high school surrounded by corn fields. In high school, I had the opportunity to learn about plant science and the many careers in that field by enrolling in the agriculture curriculum. I decided to pursue a career in plant pathology when two graduate students from Cornell AgriTech came into my horticulture class with diseased plant material and vegetables. I worked on black rot of cabbage, Xanthomonas campestris pv. I had a smooth transfer into the plant sciences program at Cornell.


The CALS at Cornell is home to one of the top viticulture and enology programs in the world and is internationally recognized for its expertise in breeding table, juice and wine grapes adapted to cool-climate growing regions. The Viticulture and Enology major increases student interest in and understanding of science by supplying a real-world application. Graduates leave Cornell with the ability to enter the wine industry, apply their scientific knowledge to another industry or career path, or enter graduate school in a number of science fields.
