How To Grow Apple Trees On Your Homestead

For the third year, GeerCrest Farm has fruit trees for sale. In we planted the Memorial Orchard, featuring over fifty varieties of apples, including the seventeen apple varieties identified as those brought to Oregon by Henderson Luelling, and six varieties of pear trees.

The Memorial Orchard is used primarily an educational resource for our Farm-Life school programs, summer camps, and workshops. The trees and their fruit provide visitors and program participants with the opportunity to see, work with, and taste heritage fruits. Heritage fruits, also called heirloom fruits, are the broad categories fruits and vegetables whose origins predate the industrial era and widespread use of hybrid varieties in industrial food production.

The Memorial Orchard is also used as one source of the scion for the new trees in our nurseries, which are sold each spring. Additional scion listed below has been acquired through partnerships with regional preservation initiatives.

The proceeds from the sale of these trees support our ongoing work as an agrarian living history museum to preserve, propagate, and promote historically accurate and historically relevant varietals.
