Present - In 2010, the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was first identified in humans in Asia. Like the viruses that cause dengue (DENV), yellow fever (YFV), and Zika, this alphavirus is believed to have originated in Africa, probably in the Central or South African region, and has now spread throughout tropical regions of the world, including in the Americas. The virus continues to expand its range, travel between endemic and non-endemic areas increases the risk of exposure and is a key risk factor for CHIKV emergence in new areas. The symptoms of chikungunya fever can be severe, but recovery is usually prompt. Serious complications are rare. The chikungunya virus is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes and is maintained in tropical regions primarily by Aedes (Stegomyia) mosquitoes. Spread of CHIKV to more temperate climates has been demonstrated in the laboratory, this would provide more opportunities for virus transmission.
Historical - The Chikungunya (also called Makonde and many other names) is a virus that is transmitted by bite of an infected mosquito and has been causing an outbreak of disease for the last few decades in Tanzania. During this time, the virus has gone through severe epidemics and made the jump from mosquito to human, with an incidence rate of 1 in 500. More recently, it has gone around the world several times and is now spreading in India, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the world.
